England - seeking a 13th title in a row - beat Scotland, Spain, Italy and Finland 3-0 in Pool A and were joined in the quarter-finals by local rivals Scotland, for whom 2-1 wins over Spain and Italy proved to be vital in claiming second place.
In Pool B, France won their clashes with the Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden and Romania 3-0, dropping just two games en route to the knockout stages. The Netherlands finished in second ahead of neighbours Belgium with hosts Romania sadly bottom of the group.
Pool C was tight and tense, with Czech Republic, Wales and Poland all finishing on six points. Whilst the Czechs had won three matches 3-0, and therefore had a superior 10-2 record in rubbers, Wales and Poland were tied on 8-4. It went down to games won, which Wales won by a narrow margin (27-13 to 26-15)!
Whilst fourth seeds Switzerland were runaway winners of Pool D on six points, Germany, Hungary and Ireland all recorded just one win each and were therefore tied on two points. Germany and Hungary were level on rubbers won, but Germany sneaked through thanks to their superior record on games won.
Day three will feature the quarter-finals and semi-finals as well as play-offs for 9th-16th positions, with finals to follow on Sunday.
