Romania aim to re-write history at ESF European Team Division 3 Championships
Apr172024
The ESF European Team Division 3 Squash Championships begin in Bucharest on Wednesday (17 April) and hosts Romania "can't sleep at night" due to the excitement!
There will be 14 men's and 14 women's teams vying for promotion to Division Two of Europe's elite national competition when the group stage action begins at the Infinity Sport Arena.
For hosts Romania, the event marks a chance to re-write an unwanted chapter in their squash history - when the European Team Division 3 Championships were last held in Bucharest in 2016 the men's team finished last!
The top two placed teams will move up to Division Two for 2025. Romania's men finished third last year and team captain Vasil Hapun says achieving promotion this time around would be "magic." He said: "We can't sleep at night because we're looking forward to playing it so much. We want to write history for our country.
"Our family and friends in the home crowd will definitely help us. Everybody wants us to win but at the same time they don't put pressure on us because we know we're not the favourites or top seeds. We will definitely go for winning this event - that's the only thing in our minds, while also staying modest and humble."
As well as captain Hapun, Romania's men have Dumitru Goian, who plays full-time as a student at Drexel University in Philadelphia, as well as ex-professional Bogdan Vasile.
Hapun added: "It's very hard to say what our chances of winning are because everybody came well prepared and trained for this event, but we are very motivated and we've been training the whole year. I think we have a pretty good chance to go through to the finals.
"This is our biggest and most important event of the year, even though some of us are playing professional tournaments as individuals. As a team, there's nothing more important than this one."
